For Steve's birthday we went adventuring again! This time we headed south through Ouray and over Red Mountain Pass to Silverton.
This was Wayne's (Jeep) inaugural jeepin trip!
On the way, Steve spotted this sign and said "Let's go 4 wheelin!"
We drove up about 1 mile to where the road splits. We took the low road and explored the waterfalls. The high road goes over the top and drops into Telluride over one of Colorado's toughest 4x4 trails!

There's the birthday boy!
Whew! We made it back down to Hwy 550 and headed into Silverton.
Steve and Lucy checked out the City Hall and found out it is even older than Steve!
Steve even found several Fords older than him too!
"All aboard!" Steve climbs on the Durango to Silverton Narrowguage Train.

Steve checks in with Lucy to see if she's ready to jeep on out of Silverton and head to Ice Lakes hike. She was!
We drove a couple miles north of Silverton and took the turnoff to South Mineral Campground. The Ice Lakes trail starts from the parking lot.

This trail crosses the creek and several waterfalls before it reaches the Ice Lakes basin.
After crossing the stream and hiking through "milkweed meadow" (above), we reached this basin and birthday boy posed with a rock!

The trail zig-zags up and comes to the top of the waterfall we crossed below.
Hiking through the pine forest, the trail turned red - just like nearby Red Mountain!
Lucy turned pink from the dust!
The trail winds past the remains of an old mine.

This was a "Kodak moment" of an Indian Paintbrush in front of a twisted tree root in a young Aspen grove.
We turned around after hiking up for 2 hours. Decided we better get back down for our drive home over Red Mountain Pass (Heebee Jeebee Hiway) before dark!
We'll go back another day and let you know what the Ice Lakes look like and whether the fishing is any good there! Why don't you come with us next time!
