Shaker Village & Keepsake Quilting, NH

8:00 am next morning, we drove north to Canterbury, New Hampshire.

One of the tour highlights for me was visiting
Canterbury Shaker Village, a museum and National Historic Landmark founded in 1969 to preserve the heritage of the Canterbury Shakers. It has 25 restored original Shaker buildings, four reconstructed Shaker buildings, and 694 acres of forests, fields, gardens, nature trails, and mill ponds under permanent conservation easement.

Canterbury Shaker Village was established in 1792 when followers of founder Mother Ann Lee formed their seventh community in Canterbury, NH, which remained prominent for 200 years. The Village has operated exclusively as a museum since 1992 when the last Shaker sister in residence, Ethel Hudson, died. The few remaining Shakers live at the Shaker Village in Sabbathday Lake, Maine. At its height in the 1850s, 300 people lived and worked in over 100 buildings on 3,000 acres at Canterbury Shaker Village.

The Meeting House is the oldest building
in the Village. It was used for worship-
which included singing and dancing. Shaker
buildings were constructed symetrically
to represent equality of men & women, but
with separate doors for men and women in
accordance with their belief in celibacy.

We picked up lunch in the Summer Kitchen...

... and enjoyed browsing the beautiful
items in the Shaker gift shop.
"Hands to Work and Hearts to God."

Then we headed north to Center Harbor, NH on Lake Winnipesaukee.

And then ... nirvana!

Keepsake Quilting - America's largest quilt shop -
hundreds of quilts suspended from the ceiling and walls, 8000 bolts of fabrics,
hundreds of books, and lots, lots more!

WOW! After shopping and shipping (stopped at the post office!) we drove on, crossed the Connecticut River into Vermont. We saw the best fall colors in Vermont, but never saw a moose.

Thinking we could shop no more, we stopped in
White River Junction, VT at yet another quilt shop!
We were faithful to our hobby and had
a good showing at their cash register - again!

We headed for Montpelier, capital of Vermont, and "home" for 2 nights.

Here's the views we had from our hotel window.
