Our very 1st egg arrived on the 4th of July! "Foggy" - the Leghorn - laid her 1st white egg at just 18 weeks! In mid-late July the others started. We get 5 varieties of eggs now.

About once a month we get a "mega egg". We think the Brahmas give us these extra large double yoke eggs.

A few times we found a shell-less egg. It's like a water balloon, but the membrane is so strong it bounced when we dropped it on the kitchen tile floor by mistake! We think these are due to immature hens.

Over the winter, egg production slowed down. Dolly, the Araucana, stopped laying her pretty green eggs all together.
In February the hens played a trick on us. We were only getting 1-3 eggs a day. Then Steve pulled back a board that had slipped below the nest boxes and found 50 eggs! For 2 weeks most of the hens had been sneaking behind the loose board - adding to the growing pile of eggs!

Our total egg count with our first-year layers at the Chicken Ranch was 1220 as of December 31, 2003!

As of May 24th we have gotten 1059 eggs during 2004. Our winter production slowed to 3-6 eggs per day. Now that warmer weather is here we're back to 9-11 eggs daily.
We can't wait until this year's new chicks start laying in late summer. We'll get over a dozen every day! Our egg customers will be happy.
