Alta Ghost Town & Lakes
August, 2002

On August 11th, we went jeepin' with Barb's son, Sean, to Alta.
We picked this trail so we'd see a ghost town as well as check out the fishing at Alta Lakes.
From the book, 4WD Trails of Southwest Colorado (Peter Massey & Jeanne Wilson), we did trail #21 - Alta Ghost Town Trail. This trail is just north of the Ophir Pass trail.

Before you reach Telluride on Hwy 145, turn left toward the Mountain Village. The trail is accessed off Hwy 145 5.1 miles after this turn. It is a relatively moderate trail and it's less than 5 miles one-way from the hwy.

3.7 miles in you reach the ghost town of Alta.

Near the boarding house, look for the small sign on the log fence leading to Alta Lakes.

As the road turns left on to the lakes, you get a great view of Lizard Head, Sunshine and Wilson peaks. Sunshine and Wilson are both over 14,000'. El Diente is also in this cluster and is another 14er.

It's only .5 miles from town to the 3 Alta Lakes.

The wild flowers around the main lake were in full bloom!

While Steve and Sean fished, Lucy swan for sticks.

Although we saw nice rainbows swimming nearby, the elusive trout would not bite!
